Active Directory Recovery using DELL Active Directory Recovery Manager.
In this post I will go through the option of installing and configuring Dell Active Directory Recovery Manager.
What is Dell Active Directory Recovery Manager?
Recovery Manager for Active Directory enables you to quickly restore your environment without taking AD offline but still maintain business continuity. With Recovery Manager, you’ll be able to:
- Maintain maximum uptime
- Prevent productivity losses from human error or hardware/software failures
- Restore AD to pinpoint changes and recover specific data
Features Set
Comprehensive recovery
Restore any object in AD, including users, attributes, organizational units (OUs), computers, subnets, sites, configurations and Group Policy Objects (GPOs). Recovery Manager helps you significantly reduce downtime and get affected users back to work quickly without restarting domain controllers. You’ll be able to eliminate downtime as well as negative impact on network users.
Online granular restore
Restore individual attributes, such as account settings, group memberships and binary attributes, even when the object itself has not been deleted. This enables you to restore only the required attributes without restarting domain controllers.
Comparison reporting
Highlight changes made since the last backup by comparing the online state of AD with its backup or by comparing multiple backups. Accelerate recovery by quickly pinpointing deleted or changed objects or attributes, and can be paired with Change Auditor to identify who made the changes.
Recovery roadmap
Generate a detailed recovery process report. This overview of every recovery stage and operation allows you to gain a better understanding and more control of every aspect of the recovery.
Integration with IT Security Search
Discover which AD objects have changed, including before and after values, and restore them to a previous state with a few clicks.
Azure Active Directory support
Quickly back up and restore Microsoft Azure Active Directory individual objects.
Delegated recovery
Assign restore tasks to specific users to cut down on recovery timelines and senior-level resource requirements.
To start the installation , click on the auto run file and then click on “Install” next to “Recovery Manager for Active Directory“
No what the installation is complete click on the newly installed application “Recover Manager for Active Directory“
In the console screen we can look an multiple options like AD Object Restore , System State Backup etc.
The focus of this post will be to create a once off backup of a Domain Controller as well as creating a backup schedule for the domain controllers.
Lets start by creating a once off backup of one of the domain controllers, to get start we need to right click on a Collection and select Add > Domain Controller.
Select the Domain Controller from Active Directory and then Click Ok.
Next, right click the Domain Controller and Select “Install Backup Agent”
Specify a user account with “Privilege Admin Access” and click next.
Once the Agent install is completed, right click the same “Domain Controller” and select “Create Backup“
The Status next the “Domain Controller” will change to “Working” and then “Success” once completed.
Next lets move on to create a “Backup Schedule” for the “Domain Controllers“, to get start click on the “Scheduling icon” highlighted.
On the “Backup Wizard” screen click on next.
Select the “Domain Controllers” to be included in the schedule and click next.
On the next screen you will be prompted to select the backup location for the “.bkf” file.
On the scheduling screen select “Later” and click on “Change“
Specify the schedule for the backups and then click Ok. (in my case it will be everyday )
You will be redirected back to the previous screen, add the User account that has privilege and click next.
On the next screen you will be prompted to create a new “Collection“, specify the collection name and click next.
On the next screen click on Finish to complete the “Backup Wizard“.
Once the “Backup Wizard” is completed , you can see that the new collection has been created under “Computer Collections“.
And that is just a quick overview of how to backup “Active Directory” using Dell Active Directory Recovery Manager.
